Task 2

To keep pace with the ever-changing society, some people choose to constantly change their lifestyle to match that of others, and this trend has been proved to have an adverse effect on personal relationships with friends and family members. Although there are some advantages of constant changes regarding lifestyle, the cons definitely outweigh the pros for the following reasons.

Firstly, a rapid change in a person’s lifestyle may lessen the amount of time a person has to spend with their family members. With the introduction of new technogical devices and competition in the workplace, people feel the urge to change their lifestyle in order to keep themselves ‘up to date’ and strive to be an efficient worker by putting in extra hours at work, purchasing the latest technological products, relying heavily on technology, so on and so forth. Although, it is irrefutable that a rapid change in lifestyle can help a person quickly adapt to modern society and modern work environment, such changes limit the amount of time used to spend with their family members. For example, some people tend to use such a great amount of time using their smartphones, surfing the Internet, or burning the midnight oil at work that hardly any time is left for family members to bond over a meal or a family trip. Work and technology seem to interfere with every ounce of quality time with our family, thus causing family members to grow apart.

Secondly, as people rapidly change their lifestyle, interaction and communication between family members can be greatly hindered. As people adopt a lifestyle to fit the hustle and bustle pace of modern life, they tend to utilize every means possible to make interactions quicker and more efficient, namely email, fax, text messages, social media, and so on. Consequently, the need to talk to other people in person is minimized in our everyday life. However, the basis of family interaction and communication stems from face-to-face conversation as it is the optimal means of getting to know one another, bonding with each other, and conveying our emotions. A change in lifestyle may sever family relationships by tricking people into thinking that conversations are not needed, leading to miscommunication in the process.

In conclusion, although a change in lifestyle is sometimes necessary in some cases to boost the efficiency in the workplace or modern society in general, people should refrain from constantly changing their lifestyle as family relationships may suffer due to this trend.
